Character Summary

It was a stormy night when Amelia Claire Winters found herself in a library looking for a dozen books for Madam Worthingwood, who either didn’t notice or (more likely) didn’t care that the servant girl was nine months pregnant. But Amelia didn’t mind. Harriet Inkwell, the Dent in charge of the library, was friendly to her and Amelia loved poking through the aisles upon aisles of books collected by the Worthingwoods over the centuries.

As she was searching for the last book, she realized that the contractions were speeding up. Seeing what was happening and thrilled at her own minor act of rebellion, Harriet ushered Amelia to a window, which she opened. The clouds parted as a thunder clap was heard in the distance, soon to be drowned out by the cries of a baby boy. Amelia named the baby Asher. The screams of the newborn reverberated through the halls of the previously quiet library, disturbing the studies of several Crats who complained loudly about the impropriety of bringing an infant to a library. It was the first time but certainly not the last time that Asher would harass the Crats.

Gabriel Alexander Quinn was disappointed to miss the birth of their firstborn, but thrilled to learn that Asher had managed to irritate so many Crats in his first minutes of life. Gabriel and Amelia didn't know that Harriet's actions ensured that their son would be a rare sorcerer among the Dents

Asher was a precocious toddler who said exactly what he thought and got away with it because he was cute.
